Port Hedland - Point Samson - Karratha - Dampier

Post by Tim.

The next stop on our road trip was Port Hedland. After being blown away by the wind at our last camp we were defeated and needed 4 walls, a hot shower, and a real bed for the night so we checked in to a park at South Hedland and manged to get an awesome cabin for $110 per night which was pretty cheap for around these parts.

Unless you are interested in mining there isn't much to see in Port Hedland. The entire town seems integrated into the various mining and port opperations.

Salt works.

Iron ore.

More salt.

After Port Hedland we headed south to Karijini and Millstream National Parks but I have decided to write another seperate blog post about them. After Karijini we headed north west back to the highway which brings you out not far south east of Port Hedland.

A short drive south and we reached the town of Roebourne. Not a lot to see here apart from the old prison museum.

At Roebourne you also find the turn off to Point Samson and a few other places. We decided to go and have a look.

Honeymoon Bay below with views to Cossack.

And another mining port.

The view from the lookout at Cossack.

We decided to continue south to Karratha and Dampier. Driving out to Dampier through Karratha, one of the first things you come across is the Red Dog memorial and after a few days around this area it's pretty obvious that the locals are pretty proud of him and his story.

Kristy tearing up. Lol

Dampier and the surrounds are all about mining too.

While in town we visited the North West Shelf Gas Project at Burrup Peninsula which is massive and is an incredible feet of engineering.

Early morning coffee looking out over the bay at Karratha.

We stayed with a friend of ours 'Rachael' who lives with her husband Brendo in their caravan in the yard of their friends Rod and Sue. Rod and Sue very kindly offered us their spare room for the two nights we were there. We had a great few days chilling out and catching up. Thanks heaps guys!!!

After leaving Karratha we headed south towards Exmouth and had a quick over nighter at Garalia Station which is at the bottom of the Exmouth Gulf. We thought it was pretty good there at $10 per night as they had good facilities including a camp kitchen with lounges.
